This is a Deep Texture Editor (DTE) focused tutorial. The slope filter operates in a straight forwards and obvious way, it is very useful for terrains where it offers control over the appearance of the material depending on the gradient of the terrains surface. This can be used, for example, to place grass on horizontal surfaces and make vertical slopes rocky, likewise for snow or mud. The uniform appearance of many materials can be improved by some variation which conforms to the shape of the object to which it is applied. Slope filtering has the advantage of being simple to set up and can respond to fine degrees of surface variation without obvious seams or visible joins.
