Without the use of third party software it is almost impossible to create the illusion of roads within a terrain that are both level and follow the geometry of the terrain, until now...

Using advanced Deep Texture Editor (DTE) methods, this tutorial show how the procedural texture source can be used to both generate a terrain heightmap and also drive the material for that same terrain in such a way as to place roads and road markings appropriately on the surface.

This is a powerful technique with many potential applications beyond that of roads.   Integrated use of procedural materials and procedurally generated heightmaps, is the next logical step for anyone who has is already familiar with the workings of the DTE.
