The Material Lab and embedded Deep Texture Editor (DTE) texture components allow the creation of almost any conceivable material.   This tutorial goes through the process of creating a chequered tile material with appropriate bump mapping to give the impression of grout lines.

Although this is a simple material the approach covered offers vital insight into the workings of the Material Lab and the Deep Texture Editor.   Along with lighting, getting to grips with the Bryce materials is key to making the image you want and not being forced to "make do" with what other have designed for you.   Being able to modify the materials and textures provided is a key skill and will result in better and more satisfactory results.   Master this aspect of Bryce along with lighting and you are 80% of the way to producing the best images any renderer is capable of.   The last 20%, in case you are wondering, is art.
